Which SSI functionalities does the Swiss E-ID provide, and where does it fall short?
It provides decentralised storage (swiyu app), decoupling of issuance and use, authenticity and integrity, and selective disclosure; it offers only device binding instead of holder binding, and it does not achieve unlinkability.
| SSI functionality | Meaning | Swiss E-ID |
|---|---|---|
| Decentralised storage | After issuance the VC is stored locally in the holder's wallet | Yes, in the swiyu app |
| Decoupling of issuance and use | Issuer not involved at use (except revocation) | Yes |
| Authenticity and integrity | Holder and verifier can cryptographically check who issued the VC and that it is unmodified | Yes |
| Selective disclosure | Holder chooses which part of the VC to present | Yes |
| Device / holder binding | VC cryptographically tied to a device or holder | Device binding only |
| Unlinkability | VCs and VPs cannot be used by issuers or verifiers to correlate data and build profiles | No: data and signatures are linkable; batch issuance is being explored as a mitigation |
The two gaps follow from the technology choice: SD-JWT with ECDSA signatures (next card) gives selective disclosure but repeats the same signature in every presentation.
