Which pilots preceded the Swiss E-ID?

The electronic learner's driving permit (eLFA) in the "pilotWallet" app, run in several cantons from 2024 until 13 August 2025, and a public beta of the trust infrastructure with the "swiyu" wallet app.

• Electronic learner's driving permit (elektronischer Lernfahrausweis, eLFA): from 2024 several cantons issued the learner's permit as a verifiable credential into the app pilotWallet. The wallet showed the permit card with a validity badge and the fields of the paper permit (photo, name, date of birth, place of origin, issue and expiry dates, category, signature). The pilot ended on 13 August 2025.
• Public beta: from 2025 authorities and companies could try the infrastructure, with the Beta Credential Service issuing test credentials into the swiyu wallet app.

Why a learner's permit? It is a real document with real verifiers (police checks) but lower stakes than a full identity card, which makes it a good first test for issuing, storing and checking credentials.
