What is the difference between human in the loop and human on the loop?

In the loop, a person actively takes part in every decision the system makes; on the loop, the system acts on its own and the person supervises and steps in only when needed. In both cases the responsibility stays with the human.

Human in the loop vs. human on the loop

* In the loop the human approves each decision; on the loop the human watches and intervenes *

Criterion Human in the loop Human on the loop
Human involvement active supervisory
When can they intervene? regularly, at every decision selectively, when needed
Typical use critical or sensitive processes automated routine tasks
Responsibility clearly with the human also with the human
Advantages more control and safety; decisions easier to trace; ethically responsible action high degree of automation; efficient for standard tasks; relieves staff
Disadvantages more time and staff; can slow processes down risk of wrong decisions in unclear situations; staff need more training to supervise the system

So the choice follows the stakes: a diagnosis or therapy decision calls for a human in the loop, while routine tasks such as logging readings can run with a human on the loop.
